Koi Varieties

A Palette of Colours and Patterns

Koi fish come in a wide array of colours and patterns, making them a captivating addition to any pond. Understanding the different varieties can help you make informed choices when selecting fish for your collection.
When choosing koi for your pond, consider your personal preferences for colour and pattern. It's important to note that koi can change in appearance as they grow, so consult with a knowledgeable dealer to make informed selections.

Kohaku & Taisho Sanke: Kohaku is a classic koi variety characterized by its brilliant white body and striking, deep-red markings. The pattern can vary from simple and elegant to intricate and bold. Taisho Sanke, often referred to as Sanke, features a white body with red and black markings. The goal is to have a balanced distribution of these colors on the fish.

Showa & Asagi: Showa koi are similar to Sanke but include black as a dominant color. A good Showa has strong, well-balanced patterns of black, red, and white. Asagi koi have a light blue or gray body with deep red, hi markings along the sides. They often resemble a beautiful sunset over water.

Utsurimono & Ogon: Utsurimono includes koi with black bodies and patterns of white, red, or yellow. These koi showcase a stark contrast between the base color and the markings. Ogon koi are solid metallic-colored fish, including varieties like Yamabuki Ogon (yellow) and Platinum Ogon (platinum or silver).

Tancho & Bekko: Tancho koi have a single, distinctive red spot on their heads. They can be of various color varieties, such as Kohaku Tancho or Showa Tancho. Bekko koi have a base color of red, white, or yellow, with small, black spots evenly distributed on the body.

Hikarimono & Kikokuryu: Hikarimono koi are known for their shimmering, metallic scales and can come in various colorations, such as Yamabuki Ogon and Hariwake. Kikokuryu is a metallic koi variety with deep black sumi (black) patterns, often resembling a dragon scale pattern.

Health and Disease Prevention

Ensuring the Well-Being of Your Koi

Maintaining the health of your koi fish is paramount to their longevity and vibrancy. Here are some insights on common health issues and how to prevent and treat them:

1. Water Quality: Regularly monitor and maintain proper water quality by checking pH levels, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels. Clean and filter your pond to provide a healthy environment for your koi.
2. Parasite Control: Keep an eye out for common parasites like itch and anchor worms. Quarantine new koi before introducing them to your main pond to prevent potential outbreaks.
3. Signs of Illness: Be vigilant for signs of illness, such as unusual behaviour, loss of appetite, lesions, or abnormal swimming. Early detection is key to successful treatment.
4. Quarantine Procedures: Always quarantine new koi fish for a few weeks before adding them to your established pond. This helps prevent the introduction of diseases.
5. Nutrition: Ensure your koi receive a balanced and high-quality diet to support their immune system and overall health.
6. Seasonal Considerations: Adjust feeding and care routines based on the changing seasons to accommodate temperature fluctuations and pond conditions.

Remember that a proactive approach to koi health is essential. Regularly educate yourself on proper care and consult with experts if you have any concerns about the well-being of your fish.
